Ngāti Hine to seek separate Treaty settlement

In a further turn in the fraught progress towards a settlement of the historical Treaty claims of Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Hine has indicated that it intends to seek its own settlement and will pursue the necessary mandate to do so.  A populous iwi in its own right, Ngāti Hine is part of the wider Ngāpuhi structure.  The Crown has long preferred a Ngāpuhi-wide settlement, which under the previous Government it sought to achieve through a failed process with the mandated entity Tuhoronuku.  Ngāti Hine spokesperson Pita Tipene was a principal campaigner against the Tuhoronuku mandate, and it will be interesting to follow this attempt by Ngāti Hine to achieve its own settlement.
